David Cogdell Oates – Sampson County, NC

Oates Family Cemetery
Sampson County, NC

The Oates Family Cemetery, located near the eastern edge of the original land grant from King George II, dates back to 1875 with the burial of David Cogdell Oates who died on July 4, 1875.  A “marker” to the memory of his father, John Oates (d 1826) is located several feet away. David’s second wife Malinda Pennington Oates and two sons by her, Jethro William Oates (d 1887) and David Jethro Oates (d 1914) are also buried here.  Two sons of Jethro William Oates, Edwin Oates and Jethro David Oates are buried here.  A daughter,  Lillie Oates McCullen is buried in the Faison Cemetery. The third son, John Martin Oates is buried in the Wayne Memorial Park .  The Oates Family Cemetery is maintained with loving care by Wanda and Martin Oates.  Thank you.

An earlier cemetery believed to date back to the early 1800s is located several hundred yards south of the family cemetery and is believed to be the grave site of John Oates, and other family members, even though no record has yet been found to confirm this.  Others believed to be buried in the unmarked graves include a daughter of John and Susannah who died at age 14 and the first two wives of Lewis Cogdell Oates before he and his family headed west by boat and covered wagon to settle in Texas.  A fence to enclose this earlier cemetery is planned.  Lewis Cogdell Oates is buried in the McClure Cemetery in Angelina County, Texas.

The burial location of John Oates’ father and mother, Jethro and Artesha Oates, and son Jethro E.  Oates (exact location unknown) is on the east side of Young Swamp on land purchased in 1768.
